What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a 4 mg dose per softgel. Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring compound studied for possible benefits in eye health, brain aging, skin, and athletic recovery.
The softgel capsule is made from vegetarian material and filled with extra virgin olive oil, mixed tocopherols (a form of vitamin E), and rosemary extract — these are inactive ingredients that help deliver and preserve the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we have for astaxanthin is still being built. For age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome, the reliable evidence to rate whether it works is insufficient.
That means the science isn't settled yet — it doesn't mean it's ineffective, just that we don't have strong proof in hand right now.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are still limited. The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
At higher doses (40 mg daily), a small number of users experienced severe stomach or abdominal pain; at the standard 6 mg dose, a few people reported increased bowel movements and red stools. There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so the safety data advises against use in both situations.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, check with your pharmacist if you take any Moderate-severity medications broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. These include many statins, some blood pressure medications, certain antihistamines, and immunosuppressant drugs.
Astaxanthin may theoretically lower how well these drugs work — though this effect hasn't yet been confirmed in humans.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin 4 mg is an option if you're curious about a supplement studied for aging-related concerns — but the evidence on whether it actually works isn't yet solid. The main thing to do before you start is check your medications against the CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 interaction list with your pharmacist, especially if you take statins, blood pressure drugs, or immunosuppressants.
It's not a good fit if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Formula
Astaxanthin is one of nature's most potent antioxidants and free radical scavengers. It has the unique ability to cross the brain/blood barrier into cells in the eye and the nervous system, and is capable of preventing oxidative damage to both kinds of tissues. Astaxanthin is many times more potent than many common antioxidants, including Vitamin C and E, and beta carotene. In fact, one scientific study showed that astaxanthin is 6000 times better at neutralizing singlet oxygen free radicals than Vitamin C.e more common form, Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone).
Brand IP Statement(s)
The eye protective benefits of astaxanthin are shown in US Patent No. 5,527,533. Zanthin brand astaxanthin is made by a proprietary Supercritical CO2 process. Zanthin is a registered trademark of Valensa.

Astaxanthin 4 mg by CHK Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 4 mg by CHK Nutrition may interact with medications broken down by two liver enzymes — CYP3A4 and CYP2B6.
The concern is theoretical: in test-tube studies, astaxanthin sped up activity of these enzymes, which could lower blood levels of drugs that depend on them to be cleared from your body. This effect hasn't been seen in people yet, but it's why we flag it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Almost 661 medications are metabolized (broken down) by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. Common examples include certain statins for cholesterol, some blood pressure drugs, antihistamines, and immunosuppressants.
If you take anything that relies on these pathways, a lower drug level might make it less effective.
Because this product's potential effect is based on lab data and not confirmed in humans, the exact risk remains uncertain. Still, Moderate severity interactions warrant a double-check.
