Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: AstaPure astaxanthin, a naturally derived carotenoid (pigment) in a dose of 8 mg per capsule. The capsule itself and the other ingredients listed are inactive — vegetarian capsule shell, soy protein, corn starch, rice bran, vegetable cellulose, silica, ascorbyl palmitate, and DL-alpha-tocopherol — they're there to hold and protect the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold on astaxanthin for the claims it's often promoted for — age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome — is rated insufficient to establish whether it works. That doesn't mean it doesn't; it means the research so far hasn't been robust enough to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. The most commonly reported side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the latter is a harmless effect of the pigment itself.
A small number of trial participants experienced increased bowel movements at lower doses and stomach pain at very high doses. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it to weigh what you know about your own situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Moderate-severity interactions are documented with drugs that your body breaks down via the CYP3A4 enzyme (a very large group that includes many statins, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, and others) and the CYP2B6 enzyme. These interactions have only been shown in lab studies, not in humans, but you should still verify your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting astaxanthin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is a single-ingredient supplement that's generally well tolerated short-term, though the evidence for what it actually does isn't established yet. The main thing to watch is that it may lower blood levels of medications your liver processes through two specific enzyme pathways — a concern backed by lab work but not yet proven in people.
Before you start, check your medications against the interaction tool on this page and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're on any long-term prescriptions.

Astaxanthin 8 mg by ResVitale Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
ResVitale Astaxanthin 8 mg contains a single active ingredient, astaxanthin, which has documented interactions with medications your body breaks down through two liver enzymes.
The most serious concern is with drugs processed by CYP3A4 — astaxanthin may lower their blood levels, potentially making them less effective. This includes a large group of common medications, though the effect has only been shown in test-tube studies, not yet in people.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects drugs metabolized by CYP2B6 in the same way — lowering their levels — again based on lab research rather than human studies. Both of these interactions carry a Moderate severity rating.
Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications. Before you start astaxanthin, use the interaction checker on this page to search your exact prescriptions, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the timing or dose of any of your medications may need adjusting.
