What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is just black currant powder—one active ingredient. It also contains maltodextrin as an inactive ingredient (a binder and filler).
Black currant is a berry concentrate, so you're getting the whole fruit's components in powdered form, including its natural sugars, fiber, and compounds like GLA.
Does it work?
Not established
We don't have established evidence that black currant powder works for the conditions it's sometimes used for. The data we hold rates it as having insufficient reliable evidence for Alzheimer disease, liver disease, upper respiratory tract infection, cough, and atopic dermatitis (eczema).
That doesn't mean it's ineffective—it means larger, better-designed trials haven't been done yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Black currant berries are safe to eat as food, but concentrated supplements like this one haven't been studied as thoroughly, so caution is warranted. In one trial of black currant seed oil at 1.8 grams twice daily for 6 weeks, a small number of participants reported mild diarrhea starting 2–10 days after beginning treatment.
We don't have enough safety data on black currant powder specifically during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, clopidogrel, or aspirin)—black currant can increase bleeding risk. Also let us know if you're taking phenothiazines, an older class of antipsychotic medication, since black currant may affect seizure risk with those drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Black currant powder might appeal to you if you're looking for a concentrated berry supplement, but the evidence for its health claims isn't established yet. If you take blood thinners or antipsychotic medications, you need to check with us first—this ingredient can interact with them.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Blackcurrant Powder 5 g from BulkSupplements.com contains one active ingredient—black currant—which does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (medicines that prevent clots). Black currant seed oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which can thin the blood further, raising your bleeding risk if you're already on a blood thinner like warfarin or aspirin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a moderate-severity interaction with phenothiazines (a type of antipsychotic medication). The GLA in black currant may lower your seizure threshold when combined with these drugs, though evidence is limited.

Black Currant, Powder
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, black currant seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding if used in combination with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a constituent of black currant seed oil, appears to have antiplatelet effects.
Phenothiazines
Theoretically, black currant seed oil might increase the risk of seizure in patients receiving phenothiazines.
Black currant seed oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). There is some concern that taking supplements containing GLA might cause seizures, or lower the seizure threshold, when taken with phenothiazines, although there is no evidence that black currant seed oil causes seizures. In one report, three patients with schizophrenia who had received phenothiazines developed EEG changes suggestive of temporal lobe epilepsy after starting treatment with GLA, although none experienced an actual seizure. In another report, two patients with schizophrenia who were stabilized on phenothiazines developed seizures when evening primrose 4 grams daily, which contains GLA, was added. One of these patients had a prior history of seizures.
