Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
BosPro 500 mg contains one active ingredient: boswellia serrata, a resin extract from the frankincense tree, supplied here as BosPure. The softgel capsule also contains inactive ingredients (sunflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, sunflower lecithin, purified water, yellow beeswax, silica, caramel color, and titanium dioxide) that help form and deliver the supplement.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Boswellia serrata is possibly effective for osteoarthritis — the evidence supports that it may help with joint pain and stiffness in that condition. For allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Alzheimer disease, asthma, and cluster headache, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works; more research is needed to know.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, boswellia serrata is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality and dose vary widely between products. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, heartburn, itching, and nausea.
Headache was reported by nearly 11% of participants in one clinical trial. A rare serious concern is bezoar formation (a hard mass in the stomach) from large amounts of the gum resin.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety information. Breastfeeding is best avoided for the same reason — safety is unknown.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking BosPro, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take medications broken down by CYP2D6 (Moderate severity), CYP2C19, CYP1A2, CYP2C9, or CYP3A4 liver enzymes — boswellia may raise their blood levels. If you also take immunosuppressants, you'll want to confirm it's okay to combine them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
BosPro may help with osteoarthritis symptoms, but it interacts with a large number of medications by affecting how your liver breaks them down. If you take any prescription drugs — especially antidepressants, blood thinners, heart or blood pressure medications, or immunosuppressants — check with your own pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not recommended without talking it over first.

BosPro 500 mg by EuroMedica Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
BosPro 500 mg by EuroMedica, which contains boswellia serrata gum resin, interacts with several groups of medications through its effect on liver enzymes that break down drugs.
The most serious concern is with CYP2D6 substrates (a Moderate severity interaction) — boswellia may raise blood levels of these medications, which include certain antidepressants, some heart rhythm drugs, and pain relievers. Lab research shows the boswellia gum resin inhibits this enzyme.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderate interactions are also documented with CYP2C19 substrates (certain blood pressure drugs, some antidepressants, and antiplatelet agents), CYP1A2 substrates (caffeine-like compounds and some other medications), CYP2C9 substrates (blood thinners and some diabetes drugs), and CYP3A4 substrates (a very large group including many heart, blood pressure, and cholesterol drugs). In each case, boswellia's enzyme-inhibiting effect may raise drug levels.
A Moderate interaction also exists with immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen the immune system, used after transplant or for severe autoimmune conditions) — boswellia may alter how these work, though the exact effect is unclear. Altogether, these interactions span 953 individual medications.
Before you start BosPro, check your exact prescriptions with the search tool on this page to see if any fall into these enzyme-inhibited groups.
