Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has 2 active ingredients: chlorophyll and natural spearmint flavor. Chlorophyll is a green pigment from plants that's been studied for a variety of purposes, though the evidence remains limited.

The product also contains inactive ingredients (sorbitol, sucrose, and glycine) that help form and sweeten the tablet.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Chlorophyll's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: breath freshness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Halitosis, oral odor, mouth freshness.
  • The closest evidence on file: Chlorophyll is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Halitosis (Natural Medicines).

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that chlorophyll works reliably for any condition — it's been studied for genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, nonmelanoma skin cancer, and pancreatitis, but all of those ratings come back as insufficient reliable evidence to rate. That doesn't mean it does nothing; it means the quality or quantity of research isn't there yet to say one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorophyll is generally well tolerated when used short-term, but high-quality long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effect reported with oral use is photosensitization — your skin becomes more sensitive to sun exposure.

Rarely, pseudoporphyria (painful, easily traumatized blisters, usually on the hands) has been reported in case studies after people took chlorophyll drinks. Significant adverse effects haven't been widely documented overall, but a thorough safety evaluation hasn't been done.

There isn't enough reliable safety information to know if chlorophyll is safe during pregnancy, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise. Safety during breastfeeding is also unknown, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.

Moderate interaction found

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chlorophyll.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 337 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check your medications against these two groups: photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity), where chlorophyll may add to that effect — and methotrexate, where chlorophyll may slow clearance from your body. Use the medication search tool on this page to confirm your exact drugs.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're on any prescription medication — especially anything that makes you sun-sensitive or a cancer or autoimmune drug — check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.

The effectiveness for any specific condition isn't established in the data we hold, so be clear on why you're considering it.

Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)

Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.

Photosensitizing Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.

Chewable Chlorophyll & Mint by Vitamin World: Common Questions

Does Chewable Chlorophyll & Mint by Vitamin World interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chewable Chlorophyll & Mint has a known interaction with 337 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chewable Chlorophyll & Mint contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough reliable safety data to know if chlorophyll is safe during pregnancy, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise. Safety during breastfeeding is also unknown. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
What is chlorophyll supposed to do?
Chlorophyll has been studied for genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, skin cancer, and pancreatitis, but the evidence we hold isn't strong enough to say it works reliably for any of those. More research would be needed to establish effectiveness.
Will this make me more sensitive to the sun?
Yes, photosensitization is the most commonly reported side effect of oral chlorophyll — meaning your skin becomes more sensitive to sun damage. If you're already taking a photosensitizing medication, the effect could be stronger. Limit sun exposure and consider sunscreen.
What are the other ingredients in this chewable?
Besides chlorophyll and the spearmint flavor, it contains sorbitol, sucrose, and glycine — these are inactive ingredients that help form and sweeten the tablet.
