Chicory is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but it may cause gas, bloating, belching, and abdominal pain — especially at higher doses. Some people are allergic to it, particularly those sensitive to the ragweed and daisy family (Asteraceae).

Allergic reactions can range from a skin rash to occupational asthma and, rarely, anaphylaxis in people with regular exposure. During pregnancy, traditional sources suggest chicory may stimulate the uterus, so medicinal amounts are best avoided.
