HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella Sugar Free by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Chlorella Sugar Free contains a single active ingredient: chlorella entire plant extract in dry form. Chlorella is a freshwater green algae that's been studied for a variety of health purposes.
The product also contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the chlorella in liquid form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data shows chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For other uses — brain tumors, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue — there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to establish how well it works.
If you're considering this for a specific health goal, talk with your doctor about what the research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated over the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely between suppliers — that's worth keeping in mind. Common side effects include allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, and discolored stools, especially in the first two weeks.
Serious reactions like anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) are rare but have been reported, both in people taking it and those preparing chlorella tablets. The safety data overall is limited, so avoid it unless your doctor approves.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this product if you're on warfarin or any blood thinner — chlorella can reduce its effectiveness. Also double-check any medications that increase sun sensitivity (photosensitizing drugs), as chlorella may make that worse.
Altogether, 336 individual medications are affected across the interactions we've documented.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth considering if you're pregnant and iron-deficient and your doctor recommends it. However, you need to avoid it if you take warfarin or photosensitizing drugs without medical approval.
Quality varies between brands, and the safety data isn't extensive — talk with your pharmacist before starting, especially if you take any prescription medications.

Chlorella Sugar Free by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella Sugar Free by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient — chlorella — that does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works; there's at least one case report of someone's warfarin therapy becoming ineffective after starting chlorella.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sun. Chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitization; five case reports describe patients who developed swelling and red-purple lesions on sun-exposed skin after taking it.
If you're on a photosensitizing medication, combining it with chlorella could increase that risk.
Altogether, these interactions span 336 individual medications. Before you start this product, check your exact prescriptions — especially if you take warfarin or any drug your doctor has told you makes you sun-sensitive.
