Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the thing to know about this pairing: it has nothing to do with how your body breaks down felbamate or how well it controls your seizures. The concern is purely about your skin and the sun. Some medicines, including felbamate, can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and chlorella has been reported (in just a handful of cases) to do the same. Put them together and you might, in theory, burn or react more easily on sun-exposed areas.

I want to stress this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not something seen often in real life. Still, simple sun smarts go a long way: use sunscreen, cover up, and watch for unusual redness, swelling, or rash. If you notice anything, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing either one.

Chlorella is a nutrient-rich freshwater green algae taken as a supplement for general wellness, immune support, and 'detox.' About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
