What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: chlorophyll complex and copper. Chlorophyll is a green pigment from plants that's been studied for various conditions, though the evidence is limited.
Copper is an essential mineral your body needs for several functions, including making red blood cells and supporting bone health. The softgel also contains inactive ingredients — sunflower oil, gelatin, and glycerin — which help deliver the active ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on chlorophyll complex for the conditions it's marketed for — including genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, skin cancer, and pancreatitis — is insufficient to rate it as reliable. That means we don't have enough solid research to say whether it works for these uses.
Copper, on the other hand, is likely effective for treating copper deficiency, but may not help with Alzheimer's disease. For acne, chemotherapy-related anemia, and brain tumors, the evidence for copper is also insufficient to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorophyll is generally well tolerated in short-term use, but high-quality long-term safety data are limited. The main concern is photosensitization — your skin becomes more sensitive to sun damage — which is the most common side effect when taken by mouth.
Rarely, a condition called pseudoporphyria (painful blisters on your hands and face) has developed after taking chlorophyll. Copper is safe in the amounts found in food and standard supplements, but excess copper can be toxic.
Contact dermatitis from copper is rare. If you have diabetes, be aware that people with diabetes tend to have higher blood copper levels, though it's not clear if elevated copper contributes to diabetes itself.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your medications with your pharmacist if you use any photosensitizing drugs (which make skin more sun-sensitive), methotrexate (Trexall), penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen), or oral contraceptive birth control pills. Chlorophyll may increase photosensitivity and slow methotrexate clearance; copper may reduce penicillamine absorption and raise copper levels with birth control use.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Consider this product if you're looking to supplement copper and are interested in chlorophyll, though the evidence for chlorophyll's effectiveness is limited. Be especially careful if you take methotrexate, photosensitizing medications, penicillamine, or birth control pills — check with your pharmacist first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should avoid this product: chlorophyll safety data are insufficient, and while copper is needed in pregnancy, high-dose supplements aren't recommended without medical guidance.

Chlorophyll Complex 100 mg by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorophyll Complex 100 mg by Puritan's Pride does interact with certain medications, and the interactions span a notable range.
The most serious concern is with photosensitizing drugs (drugs that make your skin more sensitive to sun damage) — chlorophyll itself can cause photosensitization, and using it alongside other photosensitizing medications may worsen that effect. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorophyll may also slow how your body clears methotrexate (Trexall), a medication used for cancer and autoimmune conditions. If you take methotrexate, stopping chlorophyll at least 2 days before your dose can help prevent this interaction.
The copper in this product carries Minor interactions with oral contraceptive drugs (birth control pills), which can raise copper levels in your blood — generally not a problem for most people, but worth knowing about. Copper also binds to penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen), a medication for Wilson's disease and rheumatoid arthritis, and can reduce how well your body absorbs it; separating doses by at least 2 hours helps.
Altogether, these interactions span 367 individual medications. Use the medication checker below with your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Chlorophyll Complex 100 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chlorophyll Complex
Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)
Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.
Copper
Penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen)
Theoretically, taking copper with penicillamine might decrease the absorption of penicillamine; separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
Copper chelates penicillamine, which decreases its absorption and may reduce its clinical effects.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking copper with contraceptive drugs might increase the levels and toxic effects of copper.
A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.
