Chromium Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Zemvelo
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chromium against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chromium by Zemvelo
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Zemvelo Chromium contains one active ingredient: chromium, supplied as a liquid. It also includes inactive ingredients — reverse osmosis water, fulvic acid, and sorbic acid — which serve as a base, carrier, and preservative.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for chromium varies by use. It's rated likely effective for treating chromium deficiency.
For type 2 diabetes, the data suggests it's possibly effective — some research shows it may help lower blood sugar, especially when diabetes is not well controlled. However, for prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence we hold rates it as possibly ineffective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects reported are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Skin rashes and contact dermatitis have also been reported, particularly in people with a chromium allergy. Rare serious effects — kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts — have been documented at higher doses over longer periods.
High or long-term doses carry more risk, so stick to typical supplement amounts unless your doctor advises otherwise. During pregnancy, small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are generally considered acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends it.
There's limited safety data on higher supplement doses in pregnancy and lactation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Zemvelo Chromium, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take insulin or antidiabetes drugs (Moderate severity — risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine or other thyroid hormones (Moderate severity — reduced absorption), or NSAIDs and aspirin (Minor severity — increased chromium absorption). These account for the main documented interactions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Zemvelo Chromium may be worth considering if you have a chromium deficiency or are looking to support blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes, though the evidence for the latter is modest. If you take insulin, antidiabetes medication, thyroid hormone, or regular pain relievers, talk with your pharmacist before starting — your doctor may need to adjust doses or timing.

Chromium by Zemvelo Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Zemvelo Chromium is a single-ingredient liquid supplement that does interact with several types of medications.
The most serious concern is with insulin and antidiabetes drugs — chromium may work alongside these to lower your blood sugar too much, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you take insulin or diabetes medication, your doctor may need to monitor your levels more closely.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium can also interfere with levothyroxine (Synthroid), a thyroid hormone replacement — it may bind the drug in your gut and reduce how much gets absorbed, lowering the amount in your bloodstream by around 17%. Taking them at least several hours apart may help.
Additionally, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and aspirin (NSAIDs and aspirin) may increase how much chromium your body absorbs, though this is listed as a minor concern.
Although we have interaction data for chromium's active ingredient, no interactions are documented in our data for the inactive ingredients (fulvic acid and other excipients). Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check your exact prescriptions using the interaction checker on this page.

For each ingredient in Chromium with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
