Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a single-celled freshwater green alga. It comes as a tablet or pill with no other active ingredients listed.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Chlorella's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Chlorella for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Pregnancy-related iron deficiency — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for chlorella is mixed and incomplete. It's rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency.

For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established enough for us to rate it. If you're considering it for any of these uses, ask your pharmacist or doctor what the current science supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorella is generally well tolerated short term, though product quality and purity vary widely—which matters. Common side effects include abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, gas, fatigue, and stool discoloration, especially in the first two weeks.

A small number of people have had allergic reactions, including asthma and, rarely, anaphylaxis. Because long-term safety data is limited, the safety data advises against use unless your doctor specifically approves it.

Cracked Cell Chlorella by Purium: Common Questions

Does Cracked Cell Chlorella by Purium interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Cracked Cell Chlorella has a known interaction with 337 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Cracked Cell Chlorella contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant?
The safety data rates chlorella as possibly safe in pregnancy, but there isn't much information. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you during pregnancy, especially since it's also rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency—that's a conversation worth having with your care team.
Can I take this if I'm breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for chlorella and breastfeeding. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor to decide whether it's okay for you.
What side effects should I expect?
Most people who take chlorella experience digestive upset—nausea, cramping, diarrhea, or gas—especially in the first two weeks. Your stool may also turn green. A small number of people have had allergic reactions. Stop and call your doctor if you have trouble breathing or severe swelling.
Does chlorella actually work for anything?
We have the strongest evidence for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, where it's rated possibly effective. For other uses like liver disease, depression, or fatigue, the evidence isn't solid enough to rate. If you're taking it for one of those, ask your pharmacist whether the science backs it up.
Why does the product quality matter?
Chlorella is a algae grown in water, and purity varies a lot between manufacturers. Contamination is a real concern. Stick with brands you trust and talk to your pharmacist about which ones have the best track record.
Can I take this with my multivitamin?
That depends on what's in your multivitamin and your medications—especially if you take warfarin or a blood thinner, since chlorella is high in vitamin K. Use the interaction checker on this page with your exact products, or ask your pharmacist.
