Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: cracked cell chlorella, a single-celled freshwater algae. The chlorella cell wall has been fractured to make the nutrients inside easier for your body to absorb.
There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chlorella is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency — that's the only condition where we have some reliable support.
For brain tumor, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, the evidence we hold isn't strong enough to rate it. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means we don't have solid trial data yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated over the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely — that's worth knowing. The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, gas, and constipation, especially in the first two weeks.
A small number of people also report fatigue, stool discoloration, and light sensitivity. Serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported.
Because long-term safety data is limited, the facts advise against use unless your doctor approves.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your exact medications before starting this product if you take a photosensitizing drug (anything that increases sun sensitivity) or warfarin. Both are Moderate-severity interactions.
If you're on any other prescription medication, use the checker on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Cracked Cell Chlorella may be worth considering if you have pregnancy-related iron deficiency and your doctor recommends it — that's where the evidence is strongest. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication, you'll need to talk with your pharmacist first.
Start low and watch for digestive upset in the first couple of weeks.

Cracked cell Chlorella monograph & interactionsCracked Cell Chlorella by Purium Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Cracked Cell Chlorella by Purium interacts with two important medication types.
The most serious concern is photosensitizing drugs — chlorella itself can cause sun sensitivity, and taking it alongside other drugs that do the same may amplify that risk. There are case reports of people who took chlorella and then developed swelling and red, bruised-looking rashes on sun-exposed skin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second interaction is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella is rich in vitamin K, which works against warfarin's effect.
At least one patient's warfarin therapy stopped working properly after starting chlorella supplements.
Although these interactions are documented, they're rated Moderate in severity. Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications.
If you're on either a photosensitizing drug or warfarin, or any other prescription medication, run it through the checker below before you start this product.

Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
