Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the gist with Multaq (dronedarone) and chlorella. This isn't about chlorella changing how your body breaks down dronedarone or how well it controls your heart rhythm. Instead, both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Dronedarone is a known photosensitizer, meaning it can leave you prone to easier sunburn or rashes on sun-exposed skin. Chlorella has been linked in a few case reports to swelling and reddish-purple skin reactions after sun exposure.

This is theoretical and based on pharmacology, not strong studies, so I wouldn't panic. The practical takeaway is simple: if you take both, be a little extra careful with sunscreen, hats, and shade. Mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before adding chlorella.

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
