What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains two active ingredients: L-carnitine and garcinia cambogia extract. L-carnitine is an amino acid that your body uses to move fatty acids into cells so they can be burned for energy.
Garcinia cambogia is a tropical fruit extract rich in hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is thought to affect how your body handles fat and blood sugar. The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients — hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and silicon dioxide — which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for L-carnitine is mixed. It's effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency itself, and it's possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), congestive heart failure, and angina.
For garcinia cambogia extract, the evidence we hold rates it as having insufficient reliable evidence for athletic performance, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, high cholesterol, and obesity. In plain terms: we know L-carnitine works for deficiency and may help a few heart and cholesterol conditions, but garcinia's benefits haven't been established well enough in our data to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though high doses can cause stomach upset and an unpleasant fishy body odor. Common side effects include abdominal cramps, pain, diarrhea, nausea, and heartburn.
Seizures have been reported rarely. Garcinia is generally tolerated short-term, but it's been linked in rare cases to liver injury, liver failure, mania, and heart inflammation.
Common side effects include diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, and nausea. Because safety data is not complete, L-carnitine should be used only under medical supervision.
Garcinia should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. Safety while breastfeeding is not well studied for L-carnitine, so caution is advised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners (warfarin or acenocoumarol), thyroid hormone replacement, serotonergic drugs like certain antidepressants, antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications, drugs for blood sugar control, or any medication that may stress your liver. Garcinia extract carries Moderate-severity risks with all these drug types.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take any blood thinners, thyroid medication, antidepressants, diabetes drugs, or medications that affect your liver, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using this product. L-carnitine may help with deficiency and possibly some heart and cholesterol issues, but garcinia's effectiveness for its intended uses isn't well established in our data.
The combination poses real interaction risks with common medications, so a conversation with your pharmacist is a must.

DELETE by DELETE Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
This product contains L-carnitine and garcinia cambogia extract, both of which have documented interactions with medications.
L-carnitine's most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulants): it may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and acenocoumarol (a shorter-acting blood thinner), which could raise your bleeding risk. There are at least two case reports of elevated INR (a measure of blood thinning) when acenocoumarol and L-carnitine were taken together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-carnitine also interacts with thyroid hormone replacement — it may decrease how well your thyroid medication works by blocking thyroid hormone from entering your cells. Garcinia cambogia extract carries Moderate-severity risks with serotonergic drugs (like some antidepressants), which could theoretically increase the risk of serotonin syndrome; with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs, which may increase bleeding; with drugs that affect blood sugar, which may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia); and with drugs that stress the liver, which may raise the risk of liver damage.
One case report documented serotonin syndrome when garcinia was combined with the antidepressant escitalopram.
Additionally, garcinia has also been linked in rare cases to liver injury and liver failure. Altogether, these interactions span 702 individual medications.
We couldn't check L-carnitine-L-tartrate as a separate ingredient — it's a blend form of L-carnitine already covered. Please run your exact medications through the checker below before starting this product.

For each ingredient in DELETE with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Garcinia cambogia extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.
L-Carnitine-L-Tartrate
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
