HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to nilotinib

nilotinib falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know if you're on nilotinib (Tasigna) for CML and thinking about a Garcinia weight loss supplement. Nilotinib already carries a known risk of stressing the liver, which is why your doctor checks your liver enzymes (bilirubin and AST/ALT) on a regular schedule. Garcinia has its own rare but real reports of liver injury, including cases of acute hepatitis. Stacking two things that can each bother the liver may add up.

To be fair, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these substances behave, not on solid studies of the two together. Still, with a serious drug like nilotinib, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding Garcinia, and watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness.

About Nilotinib

What Is Nilotinib Used For?

Brand name: Tasigna

  • Nilotinib is used to treat certain types of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have recently found to have this condition in adults and children 1 year of age and older. It is also used to treat certain types of CML in adults whose disease could not be treated successfully with imatinib (Gleevec) or adults who cannot take imatinib because of side effects. Nilotinib is also used to treat certain types of CML in children 1 year of age or older whose disease could not be treated successfully with other tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies or who cannot take these medications because of side effects. Nilotinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps to stop or slow the spread of cancer cells.
