Garcinia + Methylphenidate
Methylphenidate brand names: Ritalin, Ritalin-SR, Concerta, Methylin, Metadate, and others.
Garcinia has a moderate interaction with Methylphenidate. Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Methylphenidate
Methylphenidate falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: Garcinia might gently nudge up serotonin activity in the brain, and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) can do a bit of that too. Put them together and the worry is a slightly higher chance of too much serotonin signaling, which doctors call serotonin syndrome. Signs to watch for include feeling agitated or jittery, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitches, or shaking.
I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It's theoretical and built on a single anecdotal report involving an antidepressant, not methylphenidate. The real-world risk here looks low for most people. Still, since both can raise serotonin, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia, especially given its uncertain benefits and rare liver concerns.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methylphenidate page
“Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate) is itself a stimulant, and that one fact shapes most of this list. The largest cluster of interacting supplements adds a second stimulant on top of it, from ephedra and its relatives to everyday caffeine sources like coffee and green tea, which can push heart rate and blood pressure higher…”

About Garcinia
What is Garcinia?
- Weight loss
- Appetite suppression
- Curbing sugar and carb cravings
- Supporting metabolism
- Traditional cooking and souring agent
Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
About Methylphenidate
What Is Methylphenidate Used For?
Brand names: Ritalin, Ritalin-SR, Concerta, Methylin, Metadate, Metadate CD, Methylin ER, Ritalin LA, Aptensio XR, Quillivant Xr, Cotempla XR-ODT, Jornay PM, Relexxii
Methylphenidate is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) — a condition marked by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with daily life at home, school, or work. It is available in many forms (oral tablets, capsules, liquid, chewable tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and a skin patch), and each formulation has its own specific approved age range.
Some oral extended-release tablet formulations are also approved to treat narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing excessive daytime sleepiness). The oral solution and chewable tablets are indicated for children with ADHD as part of a broader treatment program that may include counseling and educational support. Not every formulation is approved for every age group or condition — check with your prescriber or pharmacist for the specifics of your product.
