Garcinia and Selegiline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Selegiline

Selegiline falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing Garcinia and selegiline. Selegiline is an MAO-B inhibitor, which means it slows the breakdown of dopamine and, at higher doses or with the patch, can also affect serotonin. Garcinia may have mild serotonin-raising activity of its own. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, push serotonin too high, leading to what we call serotonin syndrome: agitation, sweating, a racing heart, shakiness, muscle twitching, or confusion.

To be fair, this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence (a couple of case reports with antidepressants, not selegiline specifically), so I don't want to overstate it. Still, selegiline already carries serotonin cautions, so I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia.

About Garcinia

What is Garcinia?

Garcinia
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite suppression
  • Curbing sugar and carb cravings
  • Supporting metabolism
  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

About Selegiline

What Is Selegiline Used For?

Brand names: Carbex, Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
