Garcinia and Cyclobenzaprine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cyclobenzaprine

Cyclobenzaprine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the deal with pairing Garcinia and cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril). Cyclobenzaprine has mild serotonin-boosting activity in the brain, and there's a theory that Garcinia may also nudge serotonin levels up. Stack the two together and you could, in rare cases, get too much serotonin signaling, which can lead to a condition called serotonin syndrome.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It's based on a single case report involving an antidepressant, not cyclobenzaprine itself, so it's largely theoretical. Still, it's worth watching for signs like restlessness, fast heartbeat, sweating, shivering, twitching muscles, or feeling confused, especially since cyclobenzaprine already causes drowsiness and dizziness. If you're considering both, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first. Don't start or stop anything on your own.

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control.
