Garcinia and Carbamazepine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Carbamazepine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Carbamazepine

Carbamazepine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: the interaction on file lumps Carbamazepine in with serotonin-raising drugs and warns that mixing them with Garcinia could, in theory, trigger serotonin syndrome (things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, or muscle twitching). But Carbamazepine isn't really a classic serotonergic drug the way an antidepressant is, so I think this warning fits it loosely at best.

The evidence here is weak too, based on a single anecdotal report involving an antidepressant, not Carbamazepine. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. That said, Garcinia itself has been linked to rare liver problems, and Carbamazepine can also affect the liver, so I'd run this combination by your pharmacist or doctor before starting Garcinia.

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

2 of 2

Carbamazepine also falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing Garcinia and carbamazepine: both can occasionally be hard on the liver. Carbamazepine, on its own, can sometimes raise liver enzymes or, rarely, cause more serious liver inflammation. Garcinia has its own scattered reports of liver injury, including acute hepatitis. The worry is that using them together might stack those risks on top of each other.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each behaves, not solid proof that the combo causes harm. It's not about garcinia changing your carbamazepine levels. Still, since carbamazepine already needs liver monitoring, I'd talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding garcinia. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Carbamazepine page

“Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, Equetro) only controls seizures and mood episodes when its blood level stays inside a tight window, and 284 supplement and herbal ingredients on file can disturb that balance, 12 of them rated major. Grapefruit can push carbamazepine levels up, St.”

Garcinia
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite suppression
  • Curbing sugar and carb cravings
  • Supporting metabolism
  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

About Carbamazepine

What Is Carbamazepine Used For?

Brand names: Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Carnexiv

Carbamazepine is used to treat certain types of seizures — including partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and mixed seizure patterns. It works best for those specific seizure types; it does not appear to control absence (petit mal) seizures.

It is also prescribed to relieve the intense facial pain of trigeminal neuralgia — a nerve condition that causes sudden, severe pain along the face. It is not a general painkiller and shouldn't be used for ordinary aches and pains.
