DMAE Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking DMAE against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of DMAE by Higher Nature
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient supplement: DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol), also known as deanol. The product contains one active ingredient in tablet form, along with microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), lithothamnion calcarea (a mineral source), silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and a coating.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for DMAE is limited. For Alzheimer disease, the data shows it's likely ineffective.
For aging skin, ADHD, and athletic performance, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works. The science here just isn't settled.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Deanol seems to be tolerated by some adults, but the safety data is thin and side effects do happen. The most common ones are stomach discomfort (cramps, pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting) and drowsiness.
Less commonly, people have reported headache, insomnia, overstimulation, vivid dreams, confusion, and mood changes. At higher doses (above 1,000 mg daily), mood problems including depression and hypomania have been reported, especially in people with psychiatric conditions; at 1,500 mg daily, it's been linked to worsening schizophrenia symptoms.
Safety during pregnancy isn't established — the data isn't there. For breastfeeding, the concern is significant enough that it's best to avoid it.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing.

The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
DMAE is a single-ingredient supplement with limited evidence for its intended uses and a modest interaction risk with certain medication types. If you have a psychiatric condition, take brain or digestion medications, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your pharmacist first.
For everyone else on prescription medication, verify your exact drugs before starting.

DMAE by Higher Nature Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
DMAE by Higher Nature interacts with two categories of medications.
The main concern is cholinergic drugs (medications that boost acetylcholine, a brain chemical) — deanol, the active ingredient, is thought to increase acetylcholine levels, so it may amplify both the effects and side effects of these drugs. This is a Minor severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Deanol may also theoretically decrease the effectiveness of anticholinergic drugs (medications that block acetylcholine), also Minor severity, because it raises the same chemical those drugs are designed to suppress.
Altogether, these interactions span 218 individual medications. If you're on any prescription medication — especially anything for brain function, mood, bladder, or digestion — use the search tool on this page to check your exact drugs before you start.
