Here's the idea behind this one. The doxylamine part of Diclegis or Bonjesta is an antihistamine that works in part by quieting acetylcholine, a chemical messenger in the body. Deanol (DMAE) is marketed as something that may raise acetylcholine. So on paper, taking deanol could nudge against what doxylamine is doing and make it work a little less well, meaning your nausea and vomiting might not be controlled as nicely.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not something proven to happen in real people, and it's rated minor and unlikely. Also, since this medicine is used in pregnancy, please don't add deanol at all without checking first, as its safety in pregnancy isn't established. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Doxylamine and Pyridoxine Used For?

Brand names: Diclegis, Bonjesta

Doxylamine and pyridoxine is indicated for the treatment of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in women who do not respond to conservative management. This applies to the delayed-release tablets (including Diclegis and the generic doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine hydrochloride delayed-release tablets) as well as to Bonjesta, the extended-release tablet formulation.

None of these products have been studied in women with hyperemesis gravidarum (severe, persistent vomiting in pregnancy), so their use in that setting is not established.
