Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to understand: the doxylamine in Diclegis or Bonjesta is an antihistamine that already has its own anticholinergic, or drying, effect. Henbane carries those same kinds of compounds (hyoscyamine, scopolamine, atropine), so putting the two together stacks one anticholinergic load on top of another. That can mean more pronounced drowsiness, dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a fast heartbeat, or feeling confused or overheated.

I want to be honest that this concern is based on how these compounds behave rather than hard studies in people. Even so, henbane is genuinely poisonous and isn't safe to self-dose, and this combination matters even more in pregnancy. Please don't change your Diclegis or Bonjesta on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with anything like this.

About Henbane

What is Henbane?

Henbane
  • Pain relief
  • Muscle spasms and cramps
  • Sleep and sedation
  • Asthma and breathing problems (traditional)
  • Toothache (traditional)

Henbane is a highly poisonous plant containing potent alkaloids like hyoscyamine and scopolamine, and even small amounts can cause serious or deadly poisoning. While its compounds have real medical uses, these belong in carefully controlled prescription drugs, not in self-made or self-dosed herbal products. We strongly advise against using henbane as a supplement.
