Here's the thing to know about pairing henbane with imipramine: both have strong anticholinergic effects, meaning they both block the same nerve signal (acetylcholine) in your body. Imipramine already carries plenty of those effects on its own, so adding henbane simply piles more on top. We call this an additive interaction, and the two together can push the total too far.

In real terms, that could mean a very dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, trouble emptying your bladder, a racing heartbeat, confusion, or feeling overheated. In older folks especially, this can get serious quickly. This warning is based on how these compounds work rather than direct studies, but henbane is genuinely toxic, so I'd steer clear and talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
