Deanol and Clomipramine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Clomipramine

Clomipramine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Deanol interacts with.

Theoretically, deanol might decrease the effectiveness of anticholinergic drugs.
Deanol is thought to increase acetylcholine levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. Clomipramine (Anafranil) has anticholinergic activity, meaning part of how it works involves blocking acetylcholine. Deanol is marketed on the idea that it may raise acetylcholine levels. On paper, that could slightly push against clomipramine's anticholinergic effects, but this is just pharmacology theory, not something proven in real patients.

In practice, I wouldn't expect much. If anything tipped, you might notice clomipramine feeling a touch less effective, but the evidence here is weak and the chance of a real problem is low. Clomipramine itself isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the usual direction. Still, since you're managing OCD, please run any new supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clomipramine page

“A tricyclic antidepressant used mostly for OCD, clomipramine (Anafranil) is unforgiving of shifts in its blood level, which is why its 236 supplement interactions deserve genuine wariness. Most of the list involves metabolism: herbs that speed up or slow down the liver enzymes handling clomipramine can drag its level too low or push it…”
