Deanol and Pilocarpine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Pilocarpine

Pilocarpine falls under CHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Deanol interacts with.

Theoretically, deanol might increase the effects and adverse effects of cholinergic drugs.
Deanol is thought to increase acetylcholine levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with these two. Pilocarpine works by acting like acetylcholine in your body, which is why it cranks up saliva and helps with dry mouth. Deanol (DMAE) is thought to nudge your own acetylcholine levels a bit higher. So in theory, stacking them could add up and make pilocarpine's effects stronger.

If that happened, you might notice more of pilocarpine's usual side effects, like sweating, watery eyes, a runny nose, frequent bathroom trips, or stomach cramping. That said, I want to keep this in perspective: this is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not something seen often in real life. It's rated minor and unlikely. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pilocarpine page

“Pilocarpine stimulates the body's cholinergic system, whether as Salagen tablets for the dry mouth of Sjogren's or radiation treatment or as eye drops like Vuity, and its supplement list calls for real care. The one major-rated interaction among the 40 on file is activated charcoal, which soaks up the drug in the gut and can cut how mu…”

About Pilocarpine

What Is Pilocarpine Used For?

Brand names: Salagen, Pilocar, Vuity, Qlosi

Pilocarpine is used in two main ways, depending on the product. Eye drops treat certain eye conditions. Tablets treat dry mouth.

Pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution (the glaucoma product) is used to lower raised eye pressure in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is also used for acute angle-closure glaucoma, to prevent raised eye pressure after laser surgery, and to constrict the pupil (miosis). Vuity, Qlosi and a separate pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution are used for presbyopia in adults. Pilocarpine hydrochloride tablets and Salagen tablets treat dry mouth from radiation therapy for head and neck cancer and dry mouth in Sjogren's syndrome.
