Elderberry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Elderberry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Elderberry by Eclectic Herb
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried elderberry. Elderberry is a traditional herbal remedy that's been used to support immune and respiratory health, though how well it actually works for specific conditions isn't well established in the research we hold.
The liquid also contains glycerin, filtered water, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as inactive ingredients — these help preserve and deliver the elderberry extract.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for elderberry's effectiveness isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for hay fever, heart disease, chronic fatigue, COPD, cognitive function, or respiratory tract infections.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means larger, better-designed studies are needed to know for sure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly cooked or prepared elderberry extracts are generally well tolerated. The main safety concern is raw or unripe berries, seeds, leaves, and bark — these contain compounds that can cause nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, numbness, and even confusion, though cooking eliminates this risk.
Since this is a prepared liquid product from Eclectic Herb, it should be safe from that standpoint. One case report described liver inflammation in a person taking elderberry long-term alongside an autoimmune condition.
Because there isn't enough safety data, the facts advise against using elderberry supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance if you're in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Two medication types need checking: immunosuppressants (drugs that calm down your immune system, used after transplants or for autoimmune conditions) and pazopanib (Votrient, a cancer medication). Both carry Moderate-severity interaction concerns.
Use the search tool below to verify your exact medications before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Elderberry might be worth considering if you're interested in immune support, but know that the evidence for specific health claims is limited. If you take an immunosuppressant medication, cancer drug like pazopanib, or have an autoimmune condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interaction risks are real.
For most people, properly prepared elderberry is generally well tolerated.

Elderberry by Eclectic Herb Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Eclectic Herb Elderberry Liquid has documented interactions through its dried elderberry content, most notably with immunosuppressant medications.
Because elderberry stimulates immune activity, it may interfere with drugs meant to suppress the immune system — potentially reducing their effectiveness at a level we rate as Moderate concern.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a Moderate-severity interaction with pazopanib (Votrient), a cancer medication. In one documented case, a patient taking pazopanib developed severe nausea, loose stools, and liver injury after combining it with elderberry; we can't say this will happen to everyone, but it's a real risk worth discussing with your doctor or oncologist before you start this product.
Altogetherèse interactions span 121 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions fall into these categories, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding elderberry to your routine if you're on an immunosuppressant or pazopanib.
