Elderberry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Elderberry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Mountain Meadow Herbs Elderberry is a single-ingredient supplement: elderberry extract made from the ripe fruit. The liquid also contains vegetable glycerin and distilled water as inactive ingredients to preserve and deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we have does not establish elderberry's effectiveness for any of the conditions studied so far. It has been looked at for hay fever, heart disease, chronic fatigue, COPD, brain function, and respiratory infections, but the research is not yet reliable enough to say whether it works for any of them.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly cooked elderberry extract — like this product — is generally well tolerated. The main risk is from raw or unripe berries, seeds, leaves, or bark, which contain a toxin (cyanogenic glycosides) that can cause nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, and other symptoms; cooking eliminates it.
One case report linked elderberry use to autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation) in a person with an existing autoimmune disease, though the dose and duration were unknown. During pregnancy, there is not enough reliable safety data, so it's best to avoid it.
The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't sufficient information to know whether it's safe.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take immunosuppressants (medications that suppress your immune system, often used after transplant or for autoimmune diseases) or pazopanib (Votrient), a cancer drug. Elderberry may interfere with how these work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Elderberry extract is generally well tolerated in properly prepared (cooked) form, but the evidence that it actually works for common conditions isn't established yet. If you take immunosuppressant medications or pazopanib, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? There's not enough data to know it's safe, so check with your healthcare provider first.

Elderberry by Mountain Meadow Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mountain Meadow Herbs Elderberry Extract has documented interactions with immunosuppressants and pazopanib (Votrient), a cancer medication.
The most serious concern is immunosuppressants — elderberry's immunostimulant activity (it increases production of immune signaling molecules) may interfere with these drugs' ability to suppress your immune system, which could undermine their intended effect.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Pazopanib carries a Moderate interaction risk as well. One case reported that an elderberry user developed severe nausea, loose stools, and liver injury while taking pazopanib for cancer.
It's not clear whether this was due to the combination or pazopanib alone, but the possibility warrants caution.
Altogether, these interactions span 121 individual medications. If you take any immunosuppressant medication (such as those used after organ transplant or for certain autoimmune diseases) or pazopanib, check your specific drugs with the tool below before starting this product.
