Gentian Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gentian against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
Gentian is a single-ingredient liquid extract made from gentian root. It comes suspended in certified organic grain alcohol and distilled water.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gentian's effectiveness isn't established in the data we hold. Studies have looked at it for wound healing, weight loss, sinus inflammation, and stomach irritation, but the evidence is insufficient to rate how well it actually works for any of these.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, though it can upset your stomach. It hasn't been studied thoroughly at higher doses.
Because there isn't enough safety data, avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance. In a trial, some people taking gentian combined with turmeric and ginger experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating — though it's unclear whether gentian alone was responsible.
If you notice stomach upset, stop and check with your pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) are the key ones to check. Gentian may lower your blood pressure further, raising the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness.
Run your exact medications through the search tool on this page or talk with your pharmacist before combining.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gentian is a single-herb extract with a long traditional history, but we don't have strong evidence it works for the conditions it's used for. The main concern is its effect on blood pressure — if you take any blood pressure medication, you'll want to confirm it's safe with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Gentian by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Gentian can interact with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives).
In laboratory studies, gentian causes blood vessels to relax and lowers blood pressure — so taking it alongside drugs that already lower blood pressure might push your pressure too low (hypotension, or dizziness and lightheadedness).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you're on any blood pressure medication, check your exact drugs with the tool on this page before starting gentian. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether it's safe to combine them or if you need to space them out or monitor your pressure more closely.
