Glutamine Unflavored Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Glutamine Unflavored against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is straightforward — it's pure L-Glutamine, an amino acid your body produces naturally. It's one single active ingredient in powder form with no other active ingredients or fillers listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for glutamine effectiveness depends on why you're considering it. It's rated effective for sickle cell disease.
For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is possibly effective — meaning there's some support but it's not definitive. We don't hold effectiveness data for other uses you might be thinking of.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are gastrointestinal — belching, bloating, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. A couple of patients with bipolar disorder experienced mania or hypomania at higher doses, but that's rare.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use only under medical supervision. Safety data during pregnancy is rated likely safe, but there isn't enough information to know whether supplement doses are safe while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about that.
Also, because overall safety information is limited, avoid supplement doses unless your doctor recommends them.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — glutamine might theoretically reduce how well they work, though this hasn't been seen in actual patients yet.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Glutamine is one to consider if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness, though the evidence for those last two is still building. If you're on seizure medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction is theoretical but worth confirming.
Anyone with kidney or liver disease should talk with their healthcare provider before starting.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gaspari Nutrition's Glutamine Unflavored contains L-Glutamine, which has documented interactions with one medication type.
The most serious concern is with anticonvulsants (seizure medications) — glutamine is broken down into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that might work against how these drugs control seizures. However, this interaction hasn't yet been reported in actual patients, only theorized based on how glutamine is metabolized.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although the interaction is theoretical rather than clinically confirmed, anticonvulsant users should check with their doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement. Altogether, these interactions span 50 individual medications.
