Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hawthorn 1050 mg is a single-ingredient supplement. The active ingredient is hawthorn, a plant extract traditionally used in heart and circulation support.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, magnesium stearate, and rice extract blend—that serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold for hawthorn does not establish reliable effectiveness for the conditions listed in our data: angina, anxiety, arrhythmia, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive function all show insufficient evidence to rate. That doesn't mean hawthorn doesn't work for these uses—it means the studies on file don't yet support a clear claim either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hawthorn is generally well tolerated when used appropriately, though because it affects the heart, medical supervision is important if you have a heart condition. Serious adverse effects are rare; the most serious reported is a rare multiorgan allergic reaction that led to acute kidney failure.
Milder effects reported in trials and surveillance include bronchitis, slow breathing, heart palpitations, and irregular heartbeat, though these occur in small numbers of users. The facts do not contain enough safety information to recommend hawthorn during pregnancy or while breastfeeding—the advice is to avoid it in both cases until more data exists.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check before taking this if you use nitrates or PDE-5 inhibitors (Major-severity risk of low blood pressure), or beta-blockers, blood thinners, calcium channel blockers, or digoxin (Moderate-severity risks of blood pressure changes, bleeding, or drug potentiation). Your pharmacist can confirm whether your exact medications are safe with hawthorn.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Discussion: Hawthorn, also known as mayflower or may bush, is a dense, thorny shrub in the rose family. Native to northern climates, hawthorn is one of the oldest medicinal plants in Europe with a rich history. In Celtic folklore, hawthorn was believed to mend a broken heart and protect your home from evil spirits. Recent studies suggest that hawthorn may support cardiovascular function and help maintain normal, healthy blood pressure levels.

Hawthorn 1050 mg by Solaray Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawthorn 1050 mg by Solaray does interact with several medication types, and the most serious concerns are with nitrates and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5 inhibitors, used for erectile dysfunction).
Both are Major-severity interactions. With nitrates, hawthorn's ability to widen blood vessels might add to the drug's effect and lower your blood pressure too much.
With PDE-5 inhibitors, the same vasodilatory effect could combine with the medication, again risking excessive blood pressure drop.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderate interactions exist with beta-blockers, blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs), calcium channel blockers, and digoxin (Lanoxin). Hawthorn may lower blood pressure and slow heart rate alongside beta-blockers.
With blood thinners, lab and animal work suggests hawthorn might raise bleeding risk, though the human effect isn't clear. Calcium channel blockers face similar additive blood-pressure and heart effects.
Digoxin is a heart medication where hawthorn might strengthen the drug's action — and its side effects.
Altogether, these interactions span 190 individual medications. If you take any of these drug types or any other prescription medication, run it through the checker below before starting hawthorn.

Hawthorn
Nitrates
Theoretically, concomitant use might cause additive coronary vasodilatory effects.
Some evidence shows that hawthorn might lower blood pressure due to vasodilatory effects.
Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors
Theoretically, concomitant use might result in additive vasodilation and hypotension.
Hawthorn might inhibit PDE-5 and cause vasodilation.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, hawthorn may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that hawthorn can inhibit platelet aggregation. However, its effect in humans is unclear. One observational study shows that patients taking hawthorn shortly before undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery or valve replacement surgery have a 10% incidence of postoperative bleeding, compared with 1% in those who never consumed hawthorn extract. However, clinical research shows that taking a specific preparation of dried hawthorn leaves and flowers (Crataesor, Soria Natural Lab) 800 mg three times daily for 15 days does not affect platelet aggregation or levels of thromboxane B2, the metabolite of thromboxane A2, in healthy humans.
Beta-Blockers
Theoretically, concomitant use might cause additive effects on blood pressure and heart rate.
Some evidence shows that hawthorn might lower blood pressure and heart rate.
Calcium Channel Blockers
Theoretically, concomitant use might cause additive coronary vasodilation and hypotensive effects.
Some evidence shows that hawthorn might lower blood pressure due to vasodilatory effects.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, hawthorn might potentiate the effects and adverse effects of digoxin.
Hawthorn appears to improve cardiac output; however, hawthorn does not appear to affect digoxin pharmacokinetics. Case reports suggest that at least one species of hawthorn root extract (Crataegus mexicana) may produce adverse effects similar to digoxin and can cross-react with digoxin assays, leading to falsely elevated plasma digoxin levels.
