Hawthorn and Vardenafil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Major

PHOSPHODIESTERASE-5 INHIBITORS

Why this applies to Vardenafil

Vardenafil falls under PHOSPHODIESTERASE-5 INHIBITORS — the group Hawthorn interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might result in additive vasodilation and hypotension.
Hawthorn might inhibit PDE-5 and cause vasodilation.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing hawthorn and Levitra (vardenafil). Vardenafil works by relaxing blood vessels so more blood flows where it's needed, and that vessel-widening effect can lower your blood pressure a bit. Hawthorn may also relax blood vessels and, in lab studies, seems to act in a similar way to PDE-5 inhibitors. So in theory, taking them together could stack those effects and push your blood pressure too low.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, flushed, or get a headache, especially when standing up quickly. I want to be honest though: this warning is theoretical, based on how these two work rather than real cases in people. Still, since it could matter, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About Hawthorn

What is Hawthorn?

Hawthorn
  • Heart failure symptoms
  • High blood pressure
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Digestive upset
  • Anxiety

Hawthorn is a plant traditionally used for heart-related complaints, and some studies suggest it may modestly help symptoms of mild heart failure when added to standard care. However, the evidence is mixed and it should never replace prescribed heart medicines. Always talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using hawthorn, especially if you have a heart condition.
