HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Holy Basil 500 mg by Ormus Minerals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: 500 mg of holy basil (Ocimum sanctum) per capsule. Holy basil is an herb used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine and studied for potential effects on anxiety, blood sugar, and inflammation.
The capsule itself is made of gelatin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for holy basil isn't established yet. Our data show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for generalized anxiety, asthma, headaches, respiratory infections, dental plaque, or diabetes.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means large, well-designed human studies haven't been done yet to prove whether it does.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are loose stools and nausea — two out of 24 people in one clinical study reported these.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, the safety data advise against use. Animal research raises concerns and human safety isn't established for either pregnancy or breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate interaction risk), antidiabetes medications (Moderate risk of low blood sugar), or pentobarbital or other sedatives (Moderate risk of increased sleepiness). No interactions are documented for other drug types in our data, but that's not a guarantee none exist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy Basil 500 mg may be worth considering if you're interested in its traditional uses and your doctor agrees — but first, check your medications with the tool on this page, especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives. Because long-term safety data are sparse and pregnancy safety is uncertain, discuss it with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Holy Basil 500 mg by Ormus Minerals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Holy Basil 500 mg by Ormus Minerals does interact with several types of medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Moderate severity) — animal studies suggest holy basil seed oil may prolong bleeding time and increase bleeding risk, though we don't yet know if this happens in humans.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take diabetes medications. Holy basil may lower blood sugar (Moderate severity), and small clinical studies show it can reduce fasting blood glucose levels — meaning it could push your levels too low when combined with antidiabetes drugs.
Additionally, there's a theoretical interaction with pentobarbital (Nembutal, a sedative barbiturate) — animal research suggests holy basil seed oil might strengthen its sedative effects, though again, human data are limited and it's unclear if this applies to other sedatives or barbiturates.
Although our monograph holds data for this single ingredient, we have documented interactions with 212 individual medications across these drug categories. Use the medication checker below to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.
