What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Holy Basil against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Holy Basil by R-U-Ved
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
R-U-Ved Holy Basil is a single-ingredient supplement containing holy basil extract in a vegetarian capsule. Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is an herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine.
The capsule itself is the only inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for holy basil isn't well established for the conditions it's traditionally used for. Our data rates it as insufficient reliable evidence for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, and diabetes — meaning there aren't enough high-quality studies to say whether it works for these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, but long-term safety data in humans are limited. The most common side effects reported in studies were loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.
The safety data advise against using holy basil during pregnancy and breastfeeding, since animal research raises concerns and human safety hasn't been established in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check these medication types with your doctor or pharmacist: blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel), diabetes medications, and barbiturates or other sedatives like pentobarbital. All carry Moderate-severity interaction concerns with holy basil.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
R-U-Ved Holy Basil might appeal to someone looking for a traditional herb, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established yet. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives, this one needs a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Skip it — there isn't enough safety data.

Holy Basil by R-U-Ved Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
R-U-Ved Holy Basil contains one active ingredient — holy basil — that interacts with multiple medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin and aspirin): animal research suggests holy basil seed oil may prolong bleeding time and increase bleeding risk, though we don't have human data confirming this yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Holy basil may also lower blood sugar (glucose) when taken with diabetes medications, raising the theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Small studies in people with type 2 diabetes show the herb can decrease fasting blood sugar on its own.
Additionally, there's a theoretical concern that holy basil seed oil could strengthen the sedative effects of pentobarbital (a barbiturate), though again this has only been shown in animals.
Additionally, we hold no interaction data for the vegetarian capsule shell itself. Before you start this product, check your exact medications — especially any blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives — with your doctor or pharmacist.

Holy Basil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
