HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Hoodia 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hoodia 500 mg is a single-ingredient supplement — each capsule contains 500 mg of hoodia, a plant extract traditionally used as an appetite suppressant. The capsule itself is made from hypromellose, an inactive ingredient that holds the powder in place.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for hoodia's use in obesity is insufficient to rate it reliably. While it's marketed as an appetite suppressant, the data we hold doesn't establish that it works for weight loss in a way we can confidently recommend.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hoodia has limited safety data, and side effects have been reported. The most common ones are headache, dizziness, nausea, and disturbances in skin sensation.
There's also concern that hoodia can raise blood pressure and heart rate — a reason to be especially cautious if you have high blood pressure or heart concerns. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against use.
The same goes for breastfeeding — avoid this product while nursing until more is known.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on insulin or other diabetes medications — hoodia may lower your blood sugar further and raise hypoglycemia risk. Also double-check if you take any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) or beta-blockers, since hoodia can raise blood pressure and heart rate and may make these drugs less effective.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hoodia may be worth considering if you're looking for an appetite suppressant, but the evidence it actually works for weight loss isn't solid. If you take diabetes medications or blood pressure drugs, you need to talk with your doctor or pharmacist first — hoodia can interfere with how they work.
Given the limited safety data and reported side effects, a conversation with your own healthcare provider is important before you start.

Hoodia 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hoodia 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com interacts with medications through effects on blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar control.
The most serious concern is with insulin and other diabetes medications — hoodia may boost the insulin-lowering effect on your blood sugar, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and blood glucose levels need monitoring during use.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Hoodia also affects blood pressure and heart-rate medications. It can raise both your blood pressure and heart rate, which may make antihypertensive drugs (like captopril, enalapril, losartan, and valsartan) and beta-blockers (like atenolol and metoprolol) less effective at controlling your condition.
Altogether, these interactions span 262 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist about any blood pressure medications, heart medications, or diabetes drugs you're taking. The data we hold covers the interactions we can document — if you're on other prescriptions, run them through the search tool on this page to be sure.

For each ingredient in Hoodia 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hoodia
Antidiabetes Drugs
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Beta-Blockers
Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).
Insulin
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with insulin may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of insulin. Blood glucose levels should be monitored.
