by Biotics Research Corporation
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Hydro-Zyme against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hydro-Zyme contains 6 active ingredients designed to support digestion. Vitamin B6 is included for its role in metabolism and nerve function.
Betaine hydrochloride adds hydrochloric acid to boost stomach acidity. Pepsin is a digestive enzyme that breaks down protein in the stomach.
The product also contains glutamic acid, ammonium chloride, and pancreatin 4X (a blend of pancreatic enzymes) to aid the breakdown of food. The inactive ingredients are vegetable culture, cellulose, stearic acid, modified cellulose gum, silica, and food glaze — these are fillers and binders that hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for Hydro-Zyme's ingredients is mixed. Vitamin B6 is effective for sideroblastic anemia and vitamin B6 deficiency, and is likely effective for high homocysteine levels; it's possibly effective for pregnancy-related nausea.
However, betaine hydrochloride has insufficient evidence to support its use for indigestion, low thyroid, diarrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, food allergies, or hay fever — the studies just aren't there yet. We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for glutamic acid, ammonium chloride, or pancreatin 4X.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vitamin B6 is generally well tolerated at doses below 100 mg daily. At higher doses or over long periods, it can damage nerves (sensory neuropathy), especially at doses over 1,000 mg daily.
Common mild side effects include nausea, headache, and loss of appetite. Betaine hydrochloride can irritate the stomach and may cause heartburn; it's not safe if you have ulcers or gastritis.
Pepsin is generally well tolerated but may occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions, and rarely, occupational exposure to pepsin has caused allergic rhinitis or asthma. For pregnancy: vitamin B6 is likely safe, though one rating flags possibly unsafe — talk with your doctor about your specific dose and need.
Betaine hydrochloride should be avoided in pregnancy due to insufficient safety data. Pepsin safety hasn't been established in pregnancy, so it's best avoided.
For breastfeeding: vitamin B6 is likely safe, but betaine hydrochloride and pepsin lack enough safety data — discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Hydro-Zyme, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood pressure medications, amiodarone (a heart rhythm drug), phenobarbital or phenytoin (seizure medications), levodopa (for Parkinson's), or medications that lower stomach acid — including H2-blockers, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Vitamin B6 and betaine hydrochloride can reduce how well some of these work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hydro-Zyme is a digestive enzyme supplement with vitamin B6, betaine hydrochloride, and pepsin. If you take blood pressure medications, heart rhythm drugs, seizure medications, or acid-reflux or stomach-acid medications, check your exact prescriptions with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Vitamin B6 at high doses or over time can harm nerves, and betaine hydrochloride can irritate the stomach in some people. Talk it over with your healthcare provider to make sure it's right for you.

Hydro-Zyme by Biotics Research Corporation Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hydro-Zyme by Biotics Research Corporation contains ingredients that do interact with medications.
The main concern comes through its vitamin B6 content, which can affect blood pressure drugs, the heart rhythm medication amiodarone, and seizure medications like phenobarbital and phenytoin. Vitamin B6 may also interact with levodopa (a Parkinson's medication), though the interaction depends on whether carbidopa is taken with it.

Betaine hydrochloride, another active ingredient, can reduce how well acid-reflux and stomach-acid medications work — including H2-blockers, antacids, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It does this by increasing stomach acid, which counteracts what those drugs are meant to do.
We could not check glutamic acid, ammonium chloride, or pancreatin 4X for interactions because we hold no data on them. Pepsin (a digestive enzyme) was checked and shows no interactions are documented in our data, though that is not a guarantee none exist.
Altogether, these interactions span 246 individual medications. Use the search tool on this page to look up your exact medications before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Hydro-Zyme with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Vitamin B6
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, vitamin B6 might increase the photosensitivity caused by amiodarone.
Despite initial case reports suggesting that pyridoxine may have a protective effect against amiodarone-induced photosensitivity, preliminary clinical research suggests that pyridoxine may actually exacerbate this adverse effect.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, vitamin B6 may have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Research in hypertensive rats shows that vitamin B6 can decrease systolic blood pressure. Similarly, clinical research in patients with hypertension shows that taking high doses of vitamin B6 may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by reducing plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Phenobarbital (Luminal)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenobarbital.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenobarbital, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenobarbital to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenytoin.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenytoin, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenytoin to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Levodopa
Vitamin B6 may increase the metabolism of levodopa when taken alone, but not when taken in conjunction with carbidopa.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) enhances the metabolism of levodopa, reducing its clinical effects. However, this interaction does not occur when carbidopa is used concurrently with levodopa (Sinemet). Therefore, it is not likely to be a problem in most people.
Betaine Hydrochloride
Antacids
Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of antacids.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. Antacids are taken to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with antacids might decrease the effects of the antacids.
H2-Blockers
Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of H2-blockers.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. H2-blockers are used to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with H2-blockers might decrease the effects of H2-blockers.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (Ppis)
Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of PPIs.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. PPIs are used to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with PPIs might decrease the effects of PPIs
