Vitamin B6 and Aliskiren

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Aliskiren

Aliskiren falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Vitamin B6 interacts with.

Theoretically, vitamin B6 may have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Research in hypertensive rats shows that vitamin B6 can decrease systolic blood pressure. Similarly, clinical research in patients with hypertension shows that taking high doses of vitamin B6 may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by reducing plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Aliskiren (Tekturna) already lowers your blood pressure, and high-dose vitamin B6 may nudge your blood pressure down a little too. So when you take both, the effects can add up. This isn't B6 changing how Aliskiren is broken down. It's just two things pulling in the same direction.

For most people this is mild and not dangerous, but if your blood pressure drops too low you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint when standing up. The evidence here is fairly limited (some came from animal studies and small human trials), and everyday food amounts of B6 are very unlikely to matter. It's mainly the concentrated, high-dose supplements worth watching. Before starting one, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Vitamin B6

What is Vitamin B6?

  • Morning sickness in pregnancy
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Preventing or treating B6 deficiency
  • Nerve health and metabolism support
  • Nausea

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that your body needs for metabolism, brain function, and making red blood cells. It is best known for helping with pregnancy-related nausea and may help some people with PMS, but taking very high doses for long periods can cause nerve damage. Get most of your B6 from food, and check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.

About Aliskiren

What Is Aliskiren Used For?

Brand name: Tekturna

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.

Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.
