ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Chlorthalidone
Chlorthalidone falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Vitamin B6 interacts with.
Research in hypertensive rats shows that vitamin B6 can decrease systolic blood pressure. Similarly, clinical research in patients with hypertension shows that taking high doses of vitamin B6 may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by reducing plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: chlorthalidone is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and fluid. Vitamin B6, in high supplement doses, may gently lower blood pressure on its own. So when you stack the two together, the effects can add up and push your numbers down a bit more than chlorthalidone alone would.
For most people this is mild, and the evidence here is fairly limited (some animal work plus a few human studies using high doses). Still, if your readings drift too low you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or wobbly when standing up. Food amounts of B6 are very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are the concern. If you want to add B6, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

About Vitamin B6
What is Vitamin B6?
- Morning sickness in pregnancy
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Preventing or treating B6 deficiency
- Nerve health and metabolism support
- Nausea
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that your body needs for metabolism, brain function, and making red blood cells. Get most of your B6 from food, and check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
