Vitamin B6 and Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

PHENOBARBITAL (Luminal)

High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenobarbital.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenobarbital, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenobarbital to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here is the gist for your Belap, which contains phenobarbital (a barbiturate that calms the nervous system) along with belladonna. The phenobarbital piece is the one that matters here. Some early, fairly limited evidence suggests that taking high doses of vitamin B6 (around 200 mg a day) may speed up how your body clears phenobarbital, which can lower its blood levels and weaken its effect.

In real terms, if phenobarbital drops too low, you might notice it working less well, for example more anxiety, restlessness, or, if you take it for seizures, less seizure protection. This is based on weak, anecdotal data, and normal food amounts or a basic multivitamin are unlikely to cause trouble. Still, before starting a high-dose B6 supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.
