Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body uses for muscle support, immune function, and gut health. L-glutamine is found naturally in protein-rich foods, but this powder delivers it in concentrated form.
There are no inactive ingredients listed for this product.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supports L-glutamine as effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is possibly effective — meaning there's some promising data, but we need more research to be confident.
The facts don't clarify which conditions this particular product is intended to address, so check the label or ask your pharmacist what you're using it for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects are digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
A few people have reported headache, dizziness, and musculoskeletal pain. In clinical trials using high doses (10–30 grams daily) for sickle cell disease, digestive side effects were more frequent.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision. Pregnancy is rated Likely Safe.
For breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking supplement doses while nursing. Two cases of mania or hypomania have been reported in people with bipolar disorder taking glutamine — if you have bipolar disorder or a history of mood episodes, discuss this with your healthcare provider first.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Anticonvulsant or seizure medications are the main concern — glutamine might theoretically reduce their effectiveness. Check your exact medications with the search tool on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before you start if you take any seizure drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly aid recovery after surgery or serious illness. If you take anticonvulsants, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the ingredient might theoretically interfere with how your seizure medication works.
Otherwise, it's generally well tolerated, though digestive upset is common at higher doses.
