Kidney Drainage contains four active ingredients in liquid form: juniper berries extract, asparagus tops extract, plantain leaves extract, and goldenrod aerial parts extract. The product also contains two inactive ingredients — vegetable glycerin and water — as carriers and fillers.
Each of these plant extracts has traditionally been used to support kidney and urinary function. The product delivers them in a concentrated liquid form meant for oral use.

Insufficient evidence
The evidence in our data does not establish that any of the active ingredients in this product effectively treat the conditions it may be marketed for. Juniper berries, asparagus tops extract, goldenrod, and plantain leaves all carry ratings of insufficient reliable evidence for kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and related kidney and urinary conditions.
Plantain leaves (black psyllium) does have evidence supporting its use for constipation and coronary heart disease — but those are not typical uses for a kidney drainage product. For the kidney and urinary support this product is designed for, the evidence simply hasn't been established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Juniper berry is generally well tolerated in short-term, low-dose use, but medicinal doses may irritate the kidneys and shouldn't be used long-term. It's marked unsafe in pregnancy and best avoided while breastfeeding.
Asparagus tops are safe as a food but concentrated extracts are less well studied; medicinal amounts have not been proven safe. When asparagus was combined with parsley in a clinical trial, up to 50% of participants reported constipation, abdominal bloating and pain, nausea, dry mouth, and gallbladder complaints.
Plantain leaves (black psyllium) is generally well tolerated when taken with adequate fluids but can cause bloating and flatulence; rarely, it may cause bowel or esophageal obstruction if fluid intake is inadequate. Goldenrod data are limited, but allergic contact dermatitis has been reported, and it's best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety information.

Diuretic drugs (water pills) are affected by three ingredients: juniper berry, asparagus tops, and goldenrod may all theoretically increase the effects and adverse effects of diuretics. Asparagus tops and goldenrod also interact with lithium — a medication used for mood disorders — with both raising the risk of lithium buildup in your blood.
Plantain leaves extract affects several specific drugs: metformin (a diabetes medication), carbamazepine (an anticonvulsant), olanzapine (an antipsychotic), and digoxin (a heart medication) may all have reduced absorption or effectiveness if taken at the same time as this ingredient. The plantain leaves may also alter birth control pill absorption.

Plantain leaves extract
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Theoretically, black psyllium might reduce the effects of carbamazepine and increase the risk for convulsions.
Theoretically, black psyllium might reduce carbamazepine absorption. A preliminary study using blond psyllium reported decreased carbamazepine bioavailability due to binding of the drug to psyllium, as well as reduction of available fluid in the gut for dissolution of the drug. This interaction may also occur with black psyllium.
Lithium
Theoretically, taking black psyllium at the same time as lithium might reduce lithium absorption.
The fiber in black psyllium might reduce lithium absorption and plasma levels. Some case reports describe a reduction in plasma lithium levels with concomitant administration of blond psyllium. This was reversed when psyllium was stopped. This interaction may also occur with black psyllium.
Metformin (Glucophage)
Theoretically, black psyllium might increase the therapeutic and adverse effects of metformin.
Animal research shows that concurrent consumption of blond psyllium with metformin slows and increases the absorption of metformin. This interaction may also occur with black psyllium. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after metformin.
Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
Theoretically, taking black psyllium at the same time as olanzapine might reduce olanzapine absorption.
The fiber in black psyllium might decrease the absorption of olanzapine. A single case report describes a reduction in the effectiveness of olanzapine when it was concomitantly administered with an unspecified type of psyllium 3 grams orally twice daily. This effect was reversed when psyllium was stopped.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, taking black psyllium at the same time as digoxin might reduce digoxin absorption and decrease digoxin levels.
Psyllium might bind digoxin in the gut. However, some clinical evidence suggests that psyllium does not impact digoxin absorption.
Ethinyl Estradiol
Theoretically, taking black psyllium at the same time as ethinyl estradiol might alter levels of estradiol.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with ethinyl estradiol results in a slight increase in the extent of ethinyl estradiol absorption and a slower rate of absorption. This is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Theoretically, taking juniper berry with antidiabetes medications might cause additive hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that juniper berry can lower blood glucose.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, juniper berry might increase the risk of adverse effects from diuretic drugs.
Juniper berry is thought to have mild diuretic effects.
Lithium
Theoretically, juniper berry might reduce lithium excretion and increase serum levels of lithium.
Juniper berry is thought to have mild diuretic effects.
Asparagus tops extract
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, asparagus root might increase diuresis and electrolyte loss when used with diuretic drugs.
Animal studies show that asparagus root extracts have diuretic effects. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Lithium
Theoretically, asparagus root might cause diuresis, reducing lithium clearance.
Animal studies show that asparagus root extracts have diuretic effects. Theoretically, this might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
Goldenrod aerial parts extract
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, goldenrod might increase the effects and adverse effects of diuretic drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that goldenrod has diuretic effects.
