Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid (a building block of protein) at 1,500 mg per capsule. The capsule itself is gelatin, an inactive ingredient used to hold and deliver the glutamine.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supports L-glutamine as effective for sickle cell disease. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, meaning the research suggests it may help but isn't conclusive yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects reported are belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gastrointestinal pain, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
A small number of people have experienced dizziness, and in rare cases, people with bipolar disorder taking glutamine have reported mania or hypomania, though these are uncommon. There isn't enough reliable safety data in pregnancy, so the data advises caution—don't take supplemental doses unless your doctor recommends it.
The same applies to breastfeeding. If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (drugs to prevent seizures), let your doctor or pharmacist know you're considering this supplement. Glutamine is theoretically capable of opposing how these drugs work, though it hasn't been seen in practice.
They can advise whether it's right for you.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine is well-researched for sickle cell disease and may help with recovery after surgery or serious illness. If you take anticonvulsant medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—the interaction is theoretical but worth confirming for your situation.
People with kidney or liver disease should also talk it over with their healthcare provider first.
