L-Glutamine 500 mg Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine 500 mg against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Glutamine 500 mg by Allergy Research Group
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses for immune function, gut health, and muscle recovery. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients (fillers and binders) including hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and L-leucine.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is clearest for sickle cell disease, where L-glutamine is rated effective. For other uses — HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and trauma or critical illness — the evidence is rated possibly effective, meaning early studies show promise but more research is needed to be sure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral use are digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under your doctor's supervision.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend supplemental doses during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it. A couple of cases of mania or hypomania have been reported in people with bipolar disorder taking high doses, so that's worth mentioning to your healthcare provider if you have a history of mood disorders.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure preventers), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — the theory is that glutamine could work against how these drugs work, though it hasn't been seen in patients yet. With 50 individual medications potentially affected across various drug classes, it's important to verify your specific medications with the search tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery from surgery or critical illness, though more evidence is needed for those uses. It's generally well tolerated, but digestive side effects are common.
If you take seizure medication, have kidney or liver disease, or have bipolar disorder, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
