The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (the capsule material) and L-leucine (an excipient).

Moderate evidence
The evidence for L-glutamine varies by condition. It's rated effective for sickle cell disease.
For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is rated possibly effective — meaning there's some promising data, but we need more research to be confident. The evidence we hold doesn't cover other uses you might see claimed.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral doses are gastrointestinal — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, and vomiting.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. Very rarely, dizziness has occurred, and a couple of cases of mania or hypomania in people with bipolar disorder have been noted.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision. During pregnancy, the safety rating is likely safe.
There isn't enough data to know if it's safe while breastfeeding, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it then.
