L-Glutamine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Glutamine by California Gold Nutrition
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body uses for gut health, immune function, and recovery from illness or stress. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—modified cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide—which are standard binders and flow agents that help form and protect the capsule.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's also possibly effective for recovery after surgery, critical illness (such as from trauma), and wasting related to HIV/AIDS—meaning the evidence suggests it may help, but the data isn't yet conclusive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral use are gastrointestinal: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gas, and nausea or vomiting.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. Dizziness and, rarely, mood changes (mania or hypomania) have occurred in some people, usually at higher doses.
However, if you have kidney or liver disease, you should take L-glutamine only under medical supervision. The safety data during pregnancy is considered likely safe, but there isn't enough reliable information for supplemental doses while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and thinking about this supplement.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs), double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. Glutamine may theoretically reduce how well these medications work, though no confirmed cases have been reported in humans yet.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with surgical recovery or wasting from HIV/AIDS. If you're healthy, it's generally well tolerated, though it can cause mild GI upset or headache in some people.
If you take anticonvulsant medications or have kidney or liver disease, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting. Discuss it with your own healthcare provider to confirm it's right for your situation.

L-Glutamine by California Gold Nutrition has one documented interaction type: anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs).
Through its glutamine content, this product may theoretically work against anticonvulsants' effects. Glutamine breaks down into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that could oppose how seizure medications work—but this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet, only in theory.
