What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally. It's the only thing in the formula — there are no inactive fillers or other ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is strongest for sickle cell disease, where L-glutamine is rated Effective. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is Possibly Effective — meaning there's some research support but we need more data to be sure.
The specific conditions studied and doses used varied, so talk with your doctor about whether it fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects are digestive — belching, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. A small number of trial participants taking high doses (10–30 grams daily) experienced these GI effects.
Dizziness and headache are possible; one case of dizziness resolved when the dose was cut in half. Two people with bipolar disorder reported mania or hypomania while taking glutamine, so caution applies if you have a bipolar diagnosis.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use this supplement only under your doctor's supervision. There isn't enough safety data to recommend supplemental doses in pregnancy — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
Similarly, there's little safety information for breastfeeding, so avoid supplement doses unless your clinician advises it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant (seizure) medications, double-check the exact drug name with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. Theoretically, glutamine might reduce how well your medication works, though this hasn't been reported in humans.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredient we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine works best for sickle cell disease and has some research backing for recovery from surgery, critical illness, and HIV-related wasting. If you take an anticonvulsant for seizures, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
People with kidney or liver problems, bipolar disorder, or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss it with their healthcare provider first.
