L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects from probiotics in general are mild gastrointestinal discomfort—bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea—though these are uncommon.

NutraFlora scFOS can cause gas and bloating, especially at higher doses, though studies show that doses under 10 grams daily don't increase these symptoms more than a placebo. Since supplement-level doses of FOS are not well studied, check with your doctor before use.

Very rarely, L. acidophilus has been linked to serious infections in people whose immune systems or gut barriers are compromised, but this is not a typical concern in healthy people.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
