Lemon Balm Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lemon Balm against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lemon Balm by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: lemon balm extract in a base of organic grain alcohol and vegetable glycerine. Lemon balm is a leafy herb traditionally used to ease stress and support mood, and has been studied for its potential to help with cold sores and promote calm.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is rated Possibly Effective for cold sores (herpes labialis), stress, and depression based on the evidence we have on file. The data doesn't establish it works for other uses, so if you're considering it for something else, that's worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated in short-term use for healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied. In clinical trials, dizziness and sedation didn't occur more often with lemon balm than with placebo.
One case of heart rhythm changes (atrioventricular block) was reported with a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible — symptoms resolved when the product was stopped. Pregnancy: the safety data advises against use unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Breastfeeding: there isn't enough information to know either way; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use CNS depressants (Moderate concern) — sedating drugs like sleep aids, anxiety medications, antidepressants, or opioids — or thyroid hormone replacement therapy (Moderate concern).

LEMON BALM
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
