Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lemon balm extract. Lemon balm is a mint-family herb used traditionally for stress and sleep, and modern research has looked at it for cold sores and mood support.
The capsules themselves are vegetarian.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence suggests lemon balm extract is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and possibly effective for stress and depression. That means the research is promising but not yet conclusive — so it may help, but we can't guarantee it will work for everyone or that the effect is strong.
If you're considering it for one of those uses, talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety and high-dose effects haven't been thoroughly studied. Side effects like dizziness and sedation have been reported, but they don't seem to happen more often than with placebo.
One rare case of heart rhythm changes was reported in a woman using a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm itself was responsible. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
While breastfeeding, safety information is limited — talk with your doctor before using.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check if you use any CNS depressants — like sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, sleep aids, or any drug that makes you drowsy — because lemon balm might strengthen their effect. Also check if you take thyroid hormone replacement therapy, as lemon balm may reduce its effectiveness.
If you're on either type of medication, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon Balm Extract may be worth considering if you're looking for support with cold sores, stress, or mood, and you don't take CNS depressants or thyroid medication. If you do take either of those drug types, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interactions are documented but manageable with their guidance.
For short-term use in healthy adults, it's generally well tolerated, but long-term safety hasn't been fully studied.

Lemon Balm Extract by Fresh Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lemon Balm Extract by Fresh Nutrition has documented interactions with two medication categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (Moderate severity) — drugs like sedatives, sleep aids, and anxiety medications — where lemon balm might add to their calming effects and increase drowsiness or sedation. It also may interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy (Moderate severity), potentially reducing how well those medications work.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because lemon balm appears to have its own calming activity in the brain, stacking it with drugs that already slow your central nervous system could amplify that effect. Similarly, if you take thyroid medication, lemon balm's compounds might block some of its action.
Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications.
Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications through the checker on this page. If you take a CNS depressant or thyroid hormone replacement, talk with your doctor or pharmacist to see whether this product is right for you.

Lemon Balm extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
