Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • “Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (85 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This product has 4 active ingredients. Lycopene is a red pigment from tomatoes and other plants that acts as an antioxidant.

The other three — gamma-linolenic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and stearidonic acid — are fatty acids, though we have limited interaction data on them. The capsule itself is a soft-gelatin shell, an inactive ingredient that holds everything together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Lycopene's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: protective antioxidant carotenoid.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Atherosclerosis, Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Bladder cancer, Breast cancer, Cardiovascular disease (CVD) — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Lycopene is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Bladder cancer (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lycopene is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Atherosclerosis, Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Breast cancer, and more.

For prostate cancer, lycopene is possibly effective based on available evidence. For bladder cancer and diabetes, the evidence suggests it is possibly ineffective.

For high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), exercise-induced asthma, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), the data we hold is not strong enough to rate whether it works. If you're considering this product for a specific health goal, talk it over with your doctor about what the science actually supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects from the supplement itself are digestive — diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, or loss of appetite.

One case of chest pain was reported in a pregnant patient taking a lycopene product, though the role of lycopene itself was unclear. Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data on lycopene supplements is limited; food amounts are fine, but if you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor before taking the supplement form.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lycopene.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet medications like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or similar drugs — lycopene may increase bleeding risk.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This product may work for prostate cancer support, but evidence is modest. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real.

Digestive side effects are possible. For pregnancy or breastfeeding, the safety data isn't strong enough; ask your own healthcare provider whether it's right for you.

Formula

10 mg All-natural Lycopene Protective anti-oxidant carotenoid

Andrew Lessman’s Lycopene 10 provides high levels of the powerful, anti-oxidant carotenoid Lycopene in its natural form. Lycopene is a colorful pigmented anti-oxidant, which is principally found in red and orange fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, watermelon, papaya and grapefruit. Lycopene is an extremely powerful, fat-soluble anti-oxidant that protects a wide variety of lipid-based tissues and organs from free radical damage.

As the major carotenoid found in tomatoes, Lycopene is one of the primary nutrients associated with the healthy Mediterranean diet and in helping to protect the cardiovascular system. Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of Lycopene may reduce the risk of arterial changes that are associated with heart disease - the evidence is limited and not conclusive. Lycopene cannot be produced by the body, so its benefits are only delivered by food or supplements. Sadly, most Americans acquire relatively little Lycopene because of our low consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Formulation

Lycopene is of particular importance to women because it is highly concentrated in breast tissue, thereby protecting these delicate tissues from oxidative damage. Mother Nature does not play favorites, since Lycopene is equally important to men because it is the most abundant protective anti-oxidant present in the prostate gland. Preliminary research suggests that Lycopene's antioxidant benefits help protect the prostate from oxidative free radicals and support normal prostate function.

Lycopene 10 provides many times more Lycopene than is found in the leading multivitamins, to deliver powerful anti-oxidant protection and support the health of a broad range of body tissues. To assure you the greatest benefits possible, we enhance our pure natural Lycopene with the unique balance of plant-based Omega-3 fatty acids from Ahiflower Oil.

Contains no additives or common allergens of any kind.

Lycopene 10 mg by ProCaps Laboratories: Common Questions

Does Lycopene 10 mg by ProCaps Laboratories interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Lycopene 10 mg has a known interaction with 122 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Lycopene 10 mg contains 4 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What's lycopene and what is it supposed to do?
Lycopene is a red pigment from tomatoes and other plants. The evidence suggests it might help with prostate cancer, though the data is still limited. For other conditions like bladder cancer and diabetes, studies don't show it works well.
Are there side effects from this supplement?
Most people tolerate lycopene well, but some experience digestive issues like diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or indigestion. These tend to be mild and related to the supplement dose.
Is it safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Lycopene from food is fine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, supplement doses aren't well studied in these situations. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Why can't you tell me about the other three ingredients?
Gamma-linolenic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and stearidonic acid are in this product, but we don't have interaction data on file for them. That doesn't mean they're risk-free — just that we can't check them the same way we can lycopene.
I'm on a blood thinner. Can I take this?
Lycopene may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin, so this is something you need to clear with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting — don't take it without checking first.
