Maitake Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Maitake Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Maitake Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Host Defense Mushrooms Maitake Extract contains 2 active ingredients: dried maitake fungus extract and fresh maitake mycelium extract — both from the maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa). The product also includes water, alcohol, and myceliated brown rice as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract in liquid form.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for maitake's effectiveness in the conditions studied — hay fever (allergic rhinitis), cancer-related anemia and diarrhea, laryngeal cancer, and chronic fatigue syndrome — isn't established in the data we hold. All the conditions with available information have insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether maitake works for them.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maitake is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement safety hasn't been fully studied. In trials, the most common side effects were gastrointestinal — a small number of participants reported diarrhea, stomach pain (epigastric pain), or nausea, and one person had an allergic reaction (rash and itching) that cleared on its own.
Don't use concentrated maitake supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; there isn't enough safety data in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on warfarin (a blood thinner) — maitake may strengthen its effect. Also double-check if you take blood pressure medication or diabetes medication, since maitake can lower blood pressure and blood sugar further.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Maitake extract may be worth considering if you're interested in immune support, but it's not established whether it works for the conditions it's been studied in. If you take blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, or warfarin, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it — maitake can affect how these drugs work.
Stomach upset is possible but usually mild.

Maitake Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Host Defense Mushrooms Maitake Extract interacts with medications through both its dried maitake fungus extract and fresh maitake mycelium extract.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (a blood thinner), where there's limited evidence that maitake may increase warfarin's effects and raise your clotting time (INR) — one patient on a stable dose developed an elevated INR after a week of maitake.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Both maitake ingredients also interact with blood pressure drugs (antihypertensive medications). Animal research shows maitake can lower blood pressure, so combining it with your pressure medication might drop your blood pressure too far.
Similarly, if you take diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs), maitake may lower your blood glucose further — clinical research confirms maitake polysaccharide can reduce blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.
Altogether, these interactions span 260 individual medications. If you're on any blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, or warfarin, check your exact drugs with the tool on this page before starting maitake.

dried Maitake fungus extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that maitake mushroom can lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is limited evidence that maitake mushroom may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
